Amazon’s burning: Under Lula’s presidency, fires increase 100% in the rainforest

S.O.S Amazon rainforest. Worst wave of fires in the region leads public defenders to call for intervention. Forest fires doubled compared  to 2022

The Public Defender’s Office of the State of Amazonas forwarded a request for federal intervention in the state to the Attorney General’s Office (PGR). The request comes after the worst wave of fires in the region in 25 years, comprising more than 17,000  fires. In the representation, the PD  asks the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to assess the situation as a “constitutional violation”.

The director of the Department of Public Health Emergencies, Márcio Henrique de Oliveira Garcia, stated that the population of Manaus is at “serious risk of respiratory issues”. Last week, the capital of Amazonas was “swallowed” by  such a giant and dark cloud of pollution for almost 48 hours.

Amazon on fire: minister blames the farmers

The fire spread in the Amazon rainforest started off by mid-August, placing the state of Amazonas in 1st place in the ranking of the Burns Program of the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe). This was the first time in 13 years that this federation unit ranked among the worst states in the country.

According to Inpe, 17,000 fires have been detected so far, in Amazonas state alone. The number calculated up to October, 16th,  represents an increase of almost 100% compared to the same period in 2022.

Without presenting evidence, the Lula government’s Environment Minister, Marina Silva, placed the blame on farmers and livestock breeders. According to her, arson fires are caused by “farm owners who prepare the soil for cultivation after deforestation”.
